FINDING THE ARTISANS

Onora Casa showcases Mexican hand-crafted designs through a fresh lens by working together with local artisans to reimagine textiles and homewares for modern life. Discover the mission of the shop, how it supports artisan communities, and what unique items you can find for your home.

My time living in Mexico City was marked by a colorful world of food and handicrafts, coffee dates my Spanish tutor Sandra and of course, my Mexican stomach bug. Apart from the last, the trip was magical.

The food is truly remarkable (and extremely reasonable with USD), the people are kind and the handicrafts are plenty. Mexico has a very long history of craftsmanship from handmade pottery (queue the infamous Talavera), super colorful textiles, intricate beadwork and hand-blown glass (could it be necessary for drinking all those margaritas?).

I’m always on a quest to find something special to bring home as my souvenir (so much so that my husband calls himself my personal Sherpa). Naturally, I was in heaven as I got lost in the markets. I spent one of my favorite days ever combing over the coolest shops in town, buying bags of pottery, touring the super chic perfumery Xinú and then finally made my way to Onora Casa. The owners tell the story of the Mexican artisans by reimagining home décor for the modern customer, carefully weaving tradition with new ideas. This sparked the idea of working directly with the artisans to rework product from a merchandising perspective, while still maintaining the artisan's authenticity. (Quite ambitious considering I had a long way to go from Sandra's elementary mock conversations to be ready for business negotiations)!

Anyhow, it was that spark that led to all the artisan "research" so I could bring some of its magic to your home too.
